Cataract Evaluations and Post-Operative Care

A cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye which results in hazy or blurred vision.

Normally, light passes through a clear lens and is focused by the lens onto the back of the eye, creating a clear image.  As people age, the clear lens gradually hardens and clouds—forming cataracts.  A cataract evaluation is a normal part of the comprehensive eye exam at Havasu Eye Center and Parker Vision Care.

Surgery is the only treatment for cataracts.  Doctors can remove cataracts at any stage of development, however most doctors recommend surgery only after visual acuity begins to decrease.  Our doctors may or may not recommend cataract surgery based on their comprehensive evaluation of your eye.  Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that usually involves three steps.  Doctors first apply local anesthesia, then a small incision is made in the eye to remove the cloudy lens.  The lens is generally replaced with a lens called an IOL (intra-ocular lens) that is uniquely designed for each eye. There are many types of intra-ocular lenses, and they can be found at this webpage: http://www.reclaimyourvision.com/acrysof-iq-restor-iol.aspx

Cataract surgery is quick, usually very successful and restores visual acuity quickly.  Patients can return to normal activities almost immediately.  The doctors at Havasu Eye Center perform post-operative care for cataract surgery patients.

Even though cataracts form as part of the natural aging process and affect millions of people each year, cataracts need to be properly evaluated, treated, and managed.

If you believe cataracts hinder your vision, contact us to schedule a comprehensive examination.
